Regular review of your progress and goals can be key to personal and business success. Yet, when this review has you down, it can be hard to focus on moving forward. The process, although necessary can feel counterintuitive; Why do I want to focus on what didn’t get done? How do I move forward if my review leaves me feeling like a failure?

Reviewing each day, week, month and year is key to staying productive and focused on your goals. As you look back, your goal is not only to see how far you have come but to learn from it. You are bound to find things that slipped through the cracks or areas where you fell short of your goals.

Missing our goal can be discouraging, but the reality is that you are not going to achieve every goal you set out to. Shift your mindset, learn from it and let it go!

Celebrate your Wins

While looking back, reflect on all areas of your life looking at the entire picture, not just the goal. Think about the new skills you may have developed. Think about the relationships you built and how you have grown both personally and as a business owner.

You have very likely accomplished a lot in the past 12 months, even if some days it doesn’t feel like it. Celebrate every win, no matter how small it may be!

Recognize your Obstacles

As entrepreneurs, we are naturally hard on ourselves and often set unrealistic expectations. Evaluate why you didn’t reach your goal. Were your expectations reasonable? Were you short on resources – time, money, expertise? Was your strategy off? Have your priorities changed? Did personal circumstances derail your plans?

You may have lost sight of one goal because your focus was directed to another. Don’t lose sight of the little wins that are slowly moving you forward. Consistency is key when it comes to reaching our goals.

Be Flexible

When we set goals, we still need to be flexible to accommodate any life changes, while keeping your eye on the end goal. There are times when circumstances are out of our control, and we need to reevaluate our priorities in the moment.

Know that what you are facing is temporary and keep your vision in mind. My circumstances required me to press pause on my business for nearly a year after losing our home to an Arson fire. I shifted my priorities but never lost sight of my vision.

There are also times when we need to be flexible on the strategy we use. We may discover new ways of doing things; new resources become available, or we may find that the goal is no longer relevant. These are all examples of when being flexible and open to change will impact your end game.

Learn from the past

For each success, review what steps you took to reach your goal. Do more of what worked and consider what you can do to build on those results. For any failure, remember that it is temporary. Learn from it and let it go!

In order to learn from our past, we need to review your progress and your goals regularly. Reviewing each day, week, month and year is key to staying productive and focused on your goals. If we review our progress and goals regularly, we can adjust early and stay focused on our goals!
