With the new year just around the corner, we are focused on sharing some exercises and tools to prepare for your best year ever. Rather than jumping right into the planning process, it’s important to get clear on what you want and then create a life you love.
One of those valuable tools is a vision board. A vision board is a representation of what you want your life to look like. It’s a creative way to inspire action and maintain focus on your goals. Simply put, it’s a collection of images, quotes, and other items that represent your dream life.
If you’re familiar with the law of attraction, what you focus on you attract. A person who stays focused on money tends to have better finances than someone who avoids financial tasks. A person who is focused on a sport tends to use visualization to achieve their goals in that sport.
When we create a vision board and place it in an area where we can see it daily, we are essentially visualizing our success each day. Visualization is one of the best ways to manifest the life you want to live.
Writing down your goals is great, but a vision board is much more effective
We’ve all heard that quote by Robert Herjavec “A goal without a deadline is just a dream.” In this case, dreaming is just what you need to get you to your destination.
A vision board is inspiring. A notebook or a spreadsheet with a list of goals is not. Your list of goals will quickly be forgotten once the notebook is closed and tucked away. Even with the best of intentions, we may never return to that list.
Creating a vision board allows you to visualize your goals each day and we know that what you think about, you bring about!
Vision boards aren’t about the material things
Your vision board should be more about how you want to feel and what you want to experience. Yes, material things are important and should be included, but what is more important is how the things on your vision board make you feel.
I like to include photos, quotes, even items from events I attend. I tend to add note cards and handwritten notes or other trinkets that make me happy!
Vision boards keep you focused
Vision boards help you live your life on purpose. They give you direction as you plan and provide inspiration as you implement. We all have days when we lack motivation, feel unclear, or are simply having a bad day. With a vision board, you are always being reminded of what you intend to achieve and who you want to be. A vision board is a great tool to keep you focused on living the life you want to live.
How my vision board helped me rebuild my life
I have always been a big believer in using Vision Boards. I have created a few, and my last one sat prominently above my desk in my home office. It was made on a cork board and contained images of places I wanted to visit, inspirational quotes and some mementos and letters from events and clients.
My vision board was in need of updating in the fall of 2014. We had just remodeled our home and were preparing for our longest vacation ever. My business was at its peak, and I had realized that I had already achieved most of what I had posted on my vision board. It was time to update.
I had no intention of completing this task before our vacation but to tackle it as soon as I returned home, in preparation for the new year. While on vacation, we were the victims of an arson fire. We had lost everything and abruptly returned home from our trip.
The experience was very traumatic for everyone, but at the same time, there was an immediate sense of gratitude that we were not home when the fire happened. We had seen video and images of the fire before the fire department arrived and knew that that vacation just might have saved our lives.
My office was in the basement of our home and the only room in the house that we were able to easily access after the fire. For some reason, I felt compelled to take a picture of it that day. In all the destruction, this board was pretty well intact.
The image was a symbolic reminder to continue on. Yes, I had reached many of the goals I set out to achieve and had also lost them in an instant.
This image was a reminder that I had done it once and could do it again.
As we set out to rebuild our lives, I made some deliberate decisions on how we would rebuild our lives. My new life is much more like the one I would visualize, one day down the road.
It’s time to create a new vision board, to prepare for my best year ever. In my new office, I have a large cork board waiting for that new vision board to be created. This new vision board will look more like the beautiful one in the first picture, which I found on the blog Irideeën and it will guide me to whatever is next in life!
